Also in the apartment building live Gabrielle, Alex's best friend, and Jason, Gabrielle's boyfriend. Jason professes his love for Alex and they end up having sex.

Jason and Gabrielle go to a marriage counsellor but he has the opposite effect to what they hoped for. Alex and Gab are working on fixing their friendship and they are surprised to find out how much they missed each other.

  9: The Secret Life of Us (1)

  In the first part of this 2 part episode, we get to see inside the characters' heads on what event in the past has helped form the person they are today. Alex and her rollerskating, Will and the teacher, Gabrielle and first meeting Jason, Simon almost getting married, Kelly and her mice, Evan and his short story, Miranda and her parents' divorce, and Alex with her first patient. All the stories coagulate into a dinner party where Simon tells Richie that he is not to blame for Richie's problems.

  10: State of Limbo (2)

  In part 2, Richie has another homosexual encounter at the beach, and finally admits the truth to Will. Evan and Carmen's relationship continues to spiral. Gabrielle finds solace in Mac, a singer, when things with Jason begin to look uncertain. Kelly almost quits her job when she starts selling vitamins, but she soon realises that it isn't worth it.

  11: Love Sucks

  Alex has an epiphany - she doesn't need love anymore. Kelly realises that her job isn't as bad as she thought, and Evan learns the heartbreak that falling in love can cause. Will gets jealous of Sam's social life, and Gabrielle and Jason continue to fight. Alex hosts a party to celebrate her wonderful day in surgery. Richie admits to Miranda that he had sex with Simon.

  12: Fallout

  Will's jealousy problems escalate when he gets stoned and in a jealous rage, tries to force himself on Sam at a party. Simon is confronted by Miranda about his sexual encounter with Richie. Evan, after spending a drunken night with Carmen, assumes their relationship is back on track. Kel meanwhile gets involved in network marketing and meets a fellow trainee whose interest in her is more than professional, and Alex is invited by Eric to a group day trip, only to find they're alone.

  13: Secrets and Lies

  A little girl is nearly killed when Eric accidentally gives her a double dose of morphine. He begs Alex to lie for him; will she keep his secret or expose him? Evan is interested, and also intrigued, when Alex flirts with Miranda's friend Pandora. Leah's back on the scene, having broken up with her boyfriend and wanting Will back.

  14: Better the Devil You Know

  Signs of strain are starting to show in Will and Sam's relationship. Evan has a short-lived career as a glass collector. Gabrielle can't stop thinking about Jason. Alex decides that being a devoted single isn't working for her. After 2 months of network marketing, Kelly's first cheque is for only a few dollars. Richie gives up a chance to go to the movies with Miranda in the hopes that he will see Brad again.

  15: The Gap

  Kelly is in a state of shock over why she can't seem to find herself happy with Paolo. Alex and Evan flirt when he vows to be celibate for his writing. Jason starts stalking Gabrielle after he realises how inventive Mac is in bed with her. Gabrielle and Jason finally admit they couldn't get back together without killing each other. Miranda aims for a job with a producer by turning up to his party and winning him over. Richie and Will are debating how his being gay is going to affect their friendship.

  17: Piggy-in-the-Middle

  Tensions mount as Richie has to face the consequences of his encounter with Brad. Miranda throws herself into rehearsals for her new show, and develops a bond with the director. Kelly works for Simon at the Fu Bar, and tries to set him up with customers from the bar. Will and Sam find comfort in each other's company, and the intensity increases between Alex and Evan. The tension is seen by Kel, and she tries to settle it by calling a house meeting.

  18: Intimations of Mortality

  Alex and Evan are still fantasising about each other and the situation between them is becoming more and more tense. Richie is going to move out of the flat. Sam gets a new job as a reporter, but she can't find Will to tell him, so celebrates instead with Kelly, leaving him a message to meet her. Will struggles to deal with the shocking consequences of arriving late for the meet-up with Sam.

  19: A Friend Indeed

  Although Will is still devastated about Sam, he goes back to work and continues to torture himself. Kel helps him find a way to say goodbye to Sam, and tries to help him stop hating himself so much. Evan gets fired from his publishing company, and Jason drops a bombshell on Gab. A lead role in a movie is offered to Richie, but he declines to take up the offer when he discovers the nature of the role.

  20: Men on the Verge

  Richie throws himself into the gay scene, but he doesn't find the answers he was hoping for. Jason drops a bombshell on Gabrielle about his trip to Sydney. Will is desperate to make the most of life after Sam's sudden death. Simon introduces him to his financial adviser Desiree, and Will throws himself into a frenzied obsession with investment, and a short-lived sexual fling.

  21: Doorway

  Alex drops a bombshell. Evan is stunned, and throws himself into a frenzy of writing, but won't let Alex read his work. Kelly tones down her expectations with Nathan, and Gabrielle decides to give up her high-powered career and sell her half of the flat. She and Jason talk about life, love and his impending fatherhood, and come to uneasy terms. Meanwhile, Will helps move Richie's belongings to Brad's place, and Richie says goodbye to Miranda.

  Richie feels uncomfortable when Brad wants him to experiment. He confides in Simon, who offers him an alternative place to stay. Miranda and Will are becoming very close, and she's slowly letting Richie back into her life. Changes of scenery beckon for both Evan and Alex.

  1: A New World Order

  With Evan still away in New York, Alex's attention is drawn to a fellow doctor at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Richie's made his TV soap debut, but he is struggling to come to terms with life as a gay man. Caitlin and Jason are very pregnant and life is good for them. Jason is optimistic and enthusiastic about his future with Caitlin.

  2: Free Will

  A falling concrete pipe almost kills Will at work. In his mind, fate, Sam's death, and a load of adrenaline are all mixed up, leaving Will feeling invincible. Alex wonders how Rex can time his hard-ons to the second. Kelly decides to broaden her horizons and thinks about leaving her job at Fu Bar, while Miranda's "Pores Afresh" ad debuts with a party.

  3: The Dance

  Evan gets back and finds himself at the bottom of the pecking order, so he declares war on Alex and Rex's relationship. Gab goes for a job interview which feels like a date, while Miranda and Will's relationship takes an unexpected turn. It's fun and they both know it's not serious - sort of. Caitlin is swinging from bliss to pure fear as the baby's arrival draws near.

  Richie is having a great, boozy night out with Will and his dad Gordon when he decides to come out. Rex says those three little words to Alex, while Evan tries to kickstart his love life. Caitlin's due to deliver any day now, and Gabrielle feels like she's in the middle of an emotional whirlpool.

  5: The Grand Delusion

  Kelly is worried Nathan has the "Six Month Itch" as their anniversary draws near. Miranda finds herself in an on-stage catfight, and Evan tries to subvert Alex and Rex's romance. Gabrielle is reading romantic intent into every one of Dominic's actions. Evan offers a male perspective which leads Gabrielle stumbling into an embarrassing gaffe.

  Nathan is totally bored when Kelly puts him on show at a school reunion. She's desperate to impress all her old friends and is embarrassed when he leaves without telling her. At Miranda's urging, Will tries to repair his rift with Richie. Alex drives Evan mad with jealousy, and when he kisses her in the kitchen, she kisses him back.

  Alex's world comes crashing down when Rex breaks up with her. It's an ugly, upsetting shock that she didn't see coming. As Evan prepares to launch his novel, Miranda decides to join Will on his trip around Australia, and Gabrielle investigates a case of workplace bullying.

  Alex is still struggling to deal with Rex's rejection when she's blindsided by some shocking news. Gab and Dominic spend the night out of town and finally admit their feelings. Jason's a confused mess since Caitlin took his baby son interstate. He misses Angus desperately but doesn't know how he feels about Caitlin. He flies to Sydney to sort it all out.

  10: Between a Rock and a Hard Place

  Alex agonises over her pregnancy, then makes a big decision. Her friends rally round. Miranda is mortified when a video of her having sex with Richie mysteriously appears on the internet. She demands that Richie ring her agent and say it was another woman. A sharp slap across his cheek convinces Richie to make the call.

  Gab and Dominic finally give in to their desire and their first night together is magical. They admit that they're in love. Meanwhile, Alex is still struggling with the aftermath of her abortion. Evan spends quiet time with her, telling her stories, making her smile, and kissing her on the cheek when she's sleeping.

  Since Fitzroy Street Kisses hit the shelves, Evan's become a minor literary celebrity. Then, a pretty journalist, Jemima, dismisses Evan as a wanker. Evan's smitten by her disdain. Gab's parade is rained upon when she meets Dominic's lovely wife, Francesca. When she tries to confide in Alex it leads to an argument about old issues.

  Evan's besotted with Jemima but worries that Jemima is besotted with Alex. Jason crosses the line with a female colleague and lives to regret it. Now that Gab has met Dominic's wife, she's feeling full of humiliation. Meanwhile, Nathan's faith is becoming an issue, as Kelly feels excluded from a large chunk of his life.

  14: Rose Coloured Glasses

  Kelly is finally invited to Nathan's parents' place for Shabbat dinner, but Nathan tries to pass her off as a friend. Caitlin reveals that she's seeing someone, and Jason is a bit put out. She goes away for the night, leaving Angus in Jason's care. Alex and Jennifer treat a patient with a potentially fatal snake bite.

  15: Have a Little Faith

  Kelly's seriously considering conversion to Judaism. She organises a special Shabbat dinner for two, and Nathan is touched, but deep down Kelly is struggling with the idea. Dominic turns up at Gab's place and tells her that he's left Francesca. Miranda receives a new cheque from "Pores Afresh" and decides to put on her own one-woman show.

  16: The Great Divide

  Evan tries to break up with Jemima by sleeping with somebody else, but Jemima has the last laugh and they're soon breaking up for real. Alex and Christian have a secret encounter that they hide from Miranda. Miranda's still searching for the right play to perform. After reading many, she finds one that moves her to tears and prompts her to reveal a secret from her past.

  17: Sweet Revenge

  Evan is furious when Jemima heckles him during a speech and later sprays vinegar all over his room. Alex decides to date different kinds of men and ends up with more than she bargained for. Gabrielle allows her anger with Dominic to compromise the legal case of a union member. Then Dominic reveals that he's moving interstate. It really is over between them.

  18: Signs of Life

  Signs are not good for Kelly and Nathan. Evan is searching for inspiration wherever he can find it. Writer's block has set in, and things are dire until he lucks onto AA and vicariously supercharges his creativity. Gabrielle's questioning everything in work and life, now that Dominic's gone. The job offer from the ACWU is on the table but it all seems tainted.

  19: The Searchers

  Gabrielle wants to deface a sexist billboard, but she can't do it alone. After initially refusing, Jason helps out and loves it. It's an echo of their passionate, activist past together. Despite breaking up, Kelly and Nathan are still as close as ever. They know they have to make a clean break, but every time they try, it doesn't work. Nick spins back into Richie's orbit.

  20: Walpurgisnacht

  It's a party at Simon's place and everyone is there. At every party, there's someone you connect with, and, depending on the drugs, it's deeper than love. Tonight, Miranda and Kelly are party buds, and there's nothing they won't share. Alex, even though she's worn down after a gruelling day at the hospital, is glowing. Evan can't take his eyes off her.

  21: Do the Right Thing

  Evan wants an apology from Alex. Gabrielle has forgotten Jason's confession of love. Jason tries to say it a second time but Dominic arrives, forestalling him. Beaten-up Richie is healing at home, surrounded by a supportive group of friends, Simon and his boyfriend Nick. Will feels crowded out from his best friend.

  22: "Truth is Beautiful..... But So Are Lies"

  Evan's wondering if he's missed his moment when Rex arrives back into Alex's life. Miranda doesn't have enough money to take her show to Edinburgh. She asks Richie for a loan and he lies that it's tied up in investment schemes. Jason discovers that Caitlin is getting married, and the thought of losing Gus is too hard to bear.

Season 3

  1: The End Is the Beginning

  The episode starts at the end, with Alex and Rex in bed. They hear a girl moaning and groaning whilst having sex (obviously with Evan) and they wait, hoping that eventually he's going to hit "the spot". Once it's over Alex gets up to go to the bathroom, but the girl gets there first, only staying there for a short shower. Alex says to Rex that the girl should have given herself a good scrub after what she'd just done. Evan is then unpacking some things into a new bedroom. He's just moved into Gabrielle's and he, Gabrielle and Kelly toast to change. "Change is as good as a change" he says. Then it skips a day earlier earlier. Evan walks into an office dressed in a suit and is being introduced as the new guy in the advertising firm. He hasn't got much to do, and a guy comes over to him having a quick chat about when he was in the US, he and another guy managed to hold down two jobs for about 6 months before anyone realised they weren't around the place much at their first job. Miranda has a friend over and the friend, Miranda and Christian guess songs that the others sing. Miranda and the friend have a conversation about being friends with exes and the girl says that she's friends with all of her exes. Miranda says that her ex hates her sometimes, and the friend says "I guess it's different with guys". Miranda doesn't seem to catch on. Christian tries to kiss the friend at the door and she pulls away, saying she wants to be his friend and nothing more. Kelly is sitting on the grass at Uni voicing that she doesn't know how to study, how to use the library but she's loving her life. Alex does a surgical procedure and gets humiliated by another doctor who instructs her to do the procedure another way. He gets frustrated and throws the instrument across the room. Alex and Evan tell Kelly that Evan's moving out. Kelly says "too crowded for what?!", then Alex and Evan go down for a drink at a doctor's function of Alex's. Evan picks up the blonde girl that was after Rex a

  2: The Cycle

  Called "The Cycle", this episode is about the lifecycle our characters. Evans voiceover talks about the cycle in the city compared to the country, where in the city it's basically all about "night, when you sleep or try to, and day". We then see each character progressing through their day - Rex & Alex retreating to bed as they don't have to be in at the hospital until 3 that afternoon, Evan in his new job making bets on which hat the cute girl at work will wear that day, Kelly at Uni, Gab at her work seeing a man who's recently been sacked because he discovered he wasn't being paid the award rate, Christian & Miranda squabbling over the milk and then Miranda at her new job, proceeding to ask Chloe if she'd like to come over to her and Christian's place for dinner tomorrow night. Evan heads for drinks with his workmates & then continues to tell us about the week, saying "Monday you go home and watch TV, Tuesday is pretty much the same as Monday, Wednesday you start worrying about your weight or exercise and Thursday the stress begins to show and the pressure must be alleviated". Christian, Kelly and Gab are sitting in Christian & Miranda's place talking about the parallels of Star Wars and everyday life. Christian's asking whether you would be friends with Luke Skywalker considering that he controls the universe. The discussion develops to talking about September 11 and how bizarre it was the 911 is the US emergency number, and why no plane wreckage was found at the pentagon. They decide that Luke Skywalker can't exactly be compared to Osama Bin Laden. And so we hear Evan again tell us that a day in our lives is simply "a passage of time that is now over and we'll never remember it again in our lives but it will repeated again & again. The next day, obviously Friday, we see the characters fast forwarding through the morning, Evan waking up and heading for the bathroom, Miranda throwing up her hands at the empty fridge, Gab heading into her office, Alex & Rex

  3: You Can't Always Get What You Want

  Christian is spinning out of control despite Evan's effots to help him. Chloe & Miranda's big night out clubbing doesn't end as planned.Kelly bumps into Nathan-and his new wife. Evan helps Gabrielle to choose a flatmate. Although she insists on having a girl as a flatmate she finally chooses Patrick to be her flatmate after she spends some time with him.

  4: The Way We Are

  Evan and Gabrielle are salsa dancing. It reminds them of being in Cuba, the fun they had. They kiss. But that was free Gabrielle, and responsible Gabrielle lives in the real world - is sex with Evan the best idea? Alex is sure that her supervisor, Professor Vanda, is the main reason she's being sent to Edenhope, a remote posting near the SA border. For the first time in her academic life Alex feels like she is being treated as the `problem child'. Rex doesn't agree and a rift develops. Kelly is working on her first university essay. Jake is helping out. Through their shared ideas, intimacy grows. Christian gets a sexy text message from a girl, Katie, at the Fu Bar. She's sitting at the other end of the bar. Christian and Katie have a drink and he discovers that she's deaf. They can't talk to each other but there's other ways of communicating.

  5: A Square Peg in a Round Hole

  Evan is given complete control in designing a TV commercial concept. It's the first proper work he's been given and he loves it. Meanwhile, Gabrielle bravely re-enters the dating game. When Jake helps Kelly with a bibliography for her university essay, she's smitten. Alex questions her career.

  6: The Quality of My Life

  Alex's decision to move to London with Rex is cemented by a poor report from one of the senior surgeons at her hospital, despite the fact he has never operated with her. Evan helps organise a farewell party for the couple while Kelly stands back, distraught that her best friend is leaving. The farewell do is a perfect night for the happy couple and they make the impromptu decision to tie the knot in a low key ceremony on the oft used roof of their apartment building. The episode also features a confession by Miranda to her boss Chloe, and Richie battling to deal with life as an out-of-work actor.

  7: This Is Now

  Evan and Kelly's new housemate Marnie turns their lives upside down. Kelly fails in her first essay and asks Frank to hand him a new essay and he agrees. Gabrielle finds it difficult to live without Alex especially when she goes to have a swim (like she used to with Alex) and although she tries to go swimming with Kelly and Evan she still feels that it's not the same. The relationship of Miranda and Chloe gets really tight.

It's D-Day for Kelly, due to go before a tribunal to explain why she cheated in her exam. She could be failed, or thrown out of the course altogether, but more disturbing to Kelly is the thought she has lost the respect of her friends, and her teacher Frank, forever. Chloe thinks Christian could do better than Talia, and can't help baiting his girlfriend. Christian, meanwhile, is trying to beat his epilepsy by going on a health kick. His actions unwittingly draw Talia and Chloe deeper into conflict. Richie too is caught between his lover and friend, his relationships with Charlie and Simon fraying before his eyes. It all comes to a head as Gabrielle awaits the results of her election, leaving Alex and Evan's relationship changed forever
